Case Studies

Crossharnour Development
Contract Value £180,000 to date
A 230 metres long quayside supported by UB walings and CHS props. Totalling tonnes of steel. The walings were fixed to the capping beam by hanging brackets that also served as an anchorage point, used when dismantling the props and walings after the RC slab was cast immediately above the waling. The walings and brackets were sent to site pre-fabricated. The CHS props had one end pre-fabricated in the works. The other end being site fabricated to give an exact fit. Props varied in design. The majority of raking props extended up from RC thrust blocks and fitted against the waling via a system of capping plates, gussets and an insert plate that helped transmit the load from the web of the waling beam down through the walls of the prop.

The corner connections used flying props some of which fitted against RC capping beams by M30 resin anchors. Others welded directly to the flange faces of the waling, whilst another type of prop used resin anchors to fix one end and a welded connection at the other.

Both shop and site welds were tested by an independent testing house.

White City - Temporary Support Steel
Contract Value £300,000
Muliti level walings in both 356 x 368 UC and 610 x 305 UB's set against sheet piles on UB gallows brackets welded directly to the sheet piles.

CHS Raking props welded to the walings at pre-fabricated points along the waling. The lower ends of the raking props being cast in mass concrete bases excavated immediately after an access trench was cut through the batter. The same excavator being used to lift the props as dig the trench and hole for the concrete pour.

Kensal Rise – Diaphram waling system
Contract Value £295,000
140m of twin UB waling fixed against 650mm dia. contiguous piles by gallows brackets resin anchored to the piles. Horizontal raking props in various dia CHS up to 830mm dia. Site fabricated and welded into place. The gap between the walings and the piles being infilled with concrete after shear keys were installed. An access route for tipper trucks was installed over walings and props in two of the corners to allow the digging out of the deepest part of the excavation. Steelwork was installed with the use of tracked excavators due to the site conditions being un-suitable for vehicles / machines over 20 tonnes weight being employed.

Saint Pancras - Facade Support Steel
Contract Value £265,000
Three Storey Sway frame type facade support steelwork in light steelwork sections (under 97 kgm) were installed by a night shift working under Rail Trac possessions time. The steelwork was completely pre-fabricated at our works.

CHS Raking props were fabricated to site dimensions surveys at our works. The resin anchor holes were pre-drilled and the props then fitted. This was then followed by the casting of concrete thrust blocks by the main contractor. Fresi Jacks were then used to slightly stress the wall being supported.

Kings Cross and Saint Pancras
Contract Value £215,000
Kingscrossland

A series of cofferdams constructed in sheet piles with a steelwork matrix of UB walings welded to sheet piles and further braced by CHS props. The props and walings were installed with the use of a 40 tonne crawler crane and excavators working inside the cofferdam

Rye Harbour – construction of a new Fish Quay (230m long)
Contract Value £185,000
Land side twin waling supporting a new sheet pile quay side. The walings and their fittings were pre-fabricated following a detailed site survey of the curved quayside. Ground anchor support bracketry was also supplied and fitted in conjunction with Keller Piling. The glass flake paint finish of the steelwork called for a minimum of post fabrication modification to be permissible. The works was entirely tidal with less than 6 hours per day site work available at best with the work being carried out over the winter months.

Wood Street – EC2
Contract Value £150,000
The site employed raking props in UC spanning from plunge piles and fixing against RC beams within existing walls. The props were fitted in overhead pairs locating against the plunge pile at a common level and against the RC wall at levels approx 5 metres apart vertically.

Tripod sway frames, site fabricated on UC plunge pile extensions were employed to facilitate the construction of the RC tower without the need of apertures for raking props. The site welding was subject to a 100% inspection by Bovis Lend lease and a minimum of 10% NDT by a testing house.

Crown Place – Temporary Support Steel
Contract Value £135,000
82 metres of twin UB waling with horizontal UC props. The walings were propping against 600 mm dia contiguous piles with a concrete infill making up the gap between the face of the waling and the contiguous piles. Brackets fixed to the capping beams held the waling at the required level and the horizontal props over 23.5 metres long at 6,744 kg each, were supported by plunge piles at third road distance along their length. A 40 tonne mobile crane was used to install the pre-fabricated walings and the site fabricated UC props.

Queen Victoria Street – Temporary
Support Steel

Contract Value £125,000
Pre-fabricated back to back UC section raking props used on this site. They fitted to the RC walls via resin anchors set in at designated locations. R C thrust blocks were made and fresi jacks fitted between the props bases and a fly plate against the thrust block. The jacks were pressurised to 1500 psi before any further excavation work took place. Installation of the props had to be carefully controlled partly due to the works locations and partly due to the 28 metre length of the props.

Camp Road – Diaphram waling system
Contract Value £100,000
A double level waling system of UC section being used for the higher waling and a twin UB waling for the lower waling. Horizontal props constructed in back to back UB's were bolted in place on the walings.

Corner connections in the walings were fabricated on site due to the tolerance of the contigous piles alignment.

Access restrictions meant that the walings and props sections had to be site assembled. All of the site welds were tested by an independent testing house.
